Squarespace Is Great — Until It Isn’t
Don’t get me wrong – Squarespace is a solid platform. It looks nice, feels modern, and helps a lot of people get online fast. It’s great for certain phases of business (or certain personality types who genuinely enjoy a drag-and-drop moment).
But here’s the thing: at a certain point, a lot of folks hit a wall. They outgrow what Squarespace can do – or they start bumping into limitations that make everything harder than it should be.
Let’s talk about where it starts to fall apart – and what happens next.
🎨 Limited design flexibility
Squarespace templates are pretty, sure. But the second you want to change something outside the box? Get ready to fight the platform. Custom layouts, unique functionality, non-standard design choices – it’s all possible… kind of. But it’s often awkward, hacky, or downright impossible without custom code that Squarespace doesn’t exactly encourage you to use.
When you work with a developer (hi, it’s me 👋), we can either:
- Help you squeeze more life out of your existing setup, or
- Talk about when it makes sense to graduate to something more flexible, like WordPress
🔍 SEO? It’s... meh.
Squarespace has some basic SEO tools baked in, but they’re pretty surface-level. If you want to really optimize your site structure, metadata, page speed, or image handling? You’re going to run into walls. Fast.
And if you’re blogging, trying to boost rankings, or planning content strategy around keywords? There’s a ceiling here. And it’s pretty low.
🐢 Performance and page speed
This is a sneaky one. Squarespace sites often look clean, but under the hood, they’re pretty bloated – especially with animations, galleries, or stacked blocks.
Slow sites hurt your SEO and your user experience. I’ve had more than one client wonder why their beautiful site wasn’t converting, and it turned out to be a load speed issue. (We fixed it. You know how I do. 😉)
🧰 Backend limitations
If you want more control over how things work behind the scenes – or if you want to integrate something beyond the basics – Squarespace can feel like a locked box. You get what they give you, and that’s about it.
Want to expand later with custom functionality, member areas, flexible content types, or API integrations? You’re better off with something more open-ended like WordPress.
